Solar and Home Battery Installers in Mecklenburg County

Most of Mecklenburg County buys power from Duke Energy Carolinas, but not all of it. Parts of Huntersville, Cornelius and Pineville run on town-owned systems, and two co-ops serve the edges. HomeBackupPros helps you find an approved contractor who knows your provider's rules.

What you can book in Mecklenburg County

Who supplies power in Mecklenburg County

Duke Energy Carolinas serves the large majority of homes in Charlotte and the surrounding towns. A few areas are different:

Your bill tells you which one you have. Duke customers should ask whether PowerPair still has capacity and how Duke's current net metering and time-of-use options would apply to their system. Town and co-op customers should get the interconnection rules in writing before signing.

Tree canopy, HOAs and storm outages

Charlotte is known for its tree canopy, and that is the first hurdle for rooftop solar here. Older neighborhoods with big willow oaks may get far less sun on the roof than the panel count suggests. A real shade analysis should come before any quote.

Summer thunderstorms and winter ice bring those same trees down on lines. Most outages here are measured in hours, not days, which makes a home battery a good fit for keeping the refrigerator, internet, sump pump and a few circuits running.

Many newer subdivisions have HOA architectural rules. Ask the contractor to help you submit plans before installation.

Permits in Mecklenburg County

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, part of the county's Land Use and Environmental Services Agency, handles building and electrical permits for Charlotte and the towns. Residential applications are filed through the county's online system, and your installer normally does this for you.

Utility approval is a separate step. Duke has its own interconnection request process, and the town systems and co-ops each have theirs. A good contractor starts both the permit and the interconnection paperwork early.

North Carolina requires an electrical contractor license for solar installs. Every contractor on HomeBackupPros is checked for an NC license number before our team approves them.

Book a $349 home energy evaluation

There are plenty of solar companies in the Charlotte area. Getting one to give you straight numbers without a sales pitch is the hard part.

On HomeBackupPros you can book a paid home energy evaluation for $349 with an approved contractor. You get an electric audit, a review of your energy use, and a written quote for a system. If you buy the system from that same contractor, the $349 is credited toward the purchase price.

Contractors can also offer a free site visit or send an estimate, and you choose. Start with twelve months of kWh from your Duke or town bill and your goal.

Mecklenburg County questions

Who are the best solar companies in Mecklenburg County?

"Best" is our directory name, not a rating. HomeBackupPros lists independent contractors that our team has reviewed and approved, including an NC electrical contractor license check. Post your usage and goal, and approved contractors can respond with an evaluation, a site visit or an estimate.

Is all of Mecklenburg County served by Duke Energy?

No. Duke Energy Carolinas serves most homes, but parts of Huntersville, Cornelius and Pineville are on town-owned electric systems, and Union Power Cooperative and EnergyUnited serve some members in the county. Check your bill.

Who issues solar permits in Charlotte and the Mecklenburg towns?

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement handles building and electrical permits across the county. Your installer submits the application, and the utility's interconnection approval is a separate step that has to be finished before the system is switched on.

Is a battery worth it if outages in Charlotte are usually short?

For many households, yes. A battery keeps the refrigerator, internet and a few circuits running quietly during a few hours without power, and with solar it can also shift power use away from expensive time-of-use hours. Ask your contractor to model both benefits.
