How HomeBackupPros works

HomeBackupPros is a directory and request service for solar, battery and generator work. We do not install anything, employ the contractors or set their prices. We make it fast to get a qualified contractor to your house.

A contractor and a homeowner look over an electric bill at a kitchen table with an open laptop, planning a home solar installation.
A local contractor and homeowner review energy usage to design a home backup and solar system.

Enter your usage and goals

Start with your ZIP code and what you want. Add monthly kWh from your bill, what runs on electric, your roof and land, and how long backup should last. Your street address is stored encrypted.

Confirm your email

We send a one-time link. Click it and your request goes to approved contractors who serve your area.

Compare responses

Contractors send an estimate with system details, offer a site visit, or offer the standard $349 home energy evaluation that is credited toward the system if you buy.

Choose and connect

Pick a response. You both get each other's contact details right away, and the request closes.

Rate the contractor

After the visit we ask how it went. Ratings sort future responses and keep the directory honest.

What stays private

Before you accept a quote, contractors see your ZIP code, the services you picked, the rough size, your date window, your notes and your photos. We remove location data from photos in your browser before they are uploaded.

They do not see your name, street address, phone number or email until you accept their quote. Tip: keep your address out of the notes box.

Insurance, plainly

Every quote carries one of two labels. Verified means we reviewed a current certificate of liability insurance. Self-reported means the contractor told us they are insured but we have not reviewed the paperwork yet.

Every contractor here must report general liability insurance before they can quote at all. Ask for a current certificate before work starts.

Before work starts: Permits, inspections, utility interconnection and HOA rules apply to this work. Your contractor handles permits, but following the rules is on you and your contractor, not HomeBackupPros. Ask for proof of insurance, and ask your own agent how new equipment affects your homeowners policy. Details
Protect your deposit: A solar, battery or generator job usually means a large deposit and weeks of work. You can write into the contract that the contractor must post a performance bond, a payment bond, or both, in your name. If the contractor walks off or leaves unpaid subcontractors behind, you claim on the bond instead of chasing them. The contractor applies and pays for it, usually 3 to 5 percent of the bond amount, and only after you require it in writing. How a homeowner protection bond works
