Three electric providers, three sets of rules
Iredell County homes get power from one of three providers:
- Duke Energy Carolinas serves the most homes, and is the main provider in Mooresville.
- EnergyUnited, a member-owned cooperative, serves a large number of rural and suburban members across the county.
- The City of Statesville electric system, which the city describes as the first municipal electric service in North Carolina, dating to 1889.
Each provider handles customer solar its own way. Ask the contractor to spell out how your provider credits exported power and what a battery adds. Duke customers can ask whether PowerPair still has capacity.
From the lake to the foothills
Around Mooresville and Troutman, newer subdivisions sit on cleared lots with decent roof exposure, while older lake homes are often deep in hardwoods. Shade decides a lot of solar quotes here.
North of Statesville the land gets hillier toward Harmony, Union Grove and the Brushy Mountains. Dairy and cattle farms, long driveways, wells and propane tanks are the norm. Summer thunderstorms and winter ice on rural lines are the usual outage causes, and a farm with a well and a freezer full of beef has real reasons to want backup.
Barn and shop roofs are often better solar candidates than the house.
Permits in Iredell County
The Iredell County Building Standards Division handles building permits and inspections for most of the county, including Statesville addresses. Statesville handles its own zoning and utility approvals.
Mooresville is different. Since September 2023 the Town of Mooresville has run its own Building Permitting and Inspections Department for projects inside town limits.
If Statesville is your electric provider, the city asks customers to contact its Electric Department before starting any electrical project. EnergyUnited and Duke customers need their own interconnection approval. Every contractor on HomeBackupPros is checked for an NC electrical contractor license, which North Carolina requires for solar work.
Book a $349 home energy evaluation
Iredell County is growing fast, and solar companies are stretched thin. Getting one to come look at a farm near Union Grove can feel impossible.
On HomeBackupPros you can book a paid home energy evaluation for $349. An approved contractor does an electric audit, reviews your energy use, and gives you a written quote. If you buy the system from that same contractor, the $349 is credited toward the purchase price.
Contractors can also offer a free site visit or send an estimate, and you choose. Enter twelve months of kWh, what runs on gas, propane or electric, and your goal, from a lower bill to several days of backup.

Iredell County questions
Who are the solar installers near me in Iredell County?
HomeBackupPros lists independent contractors that our team reviews and approves, including a check of their NC electrical contractor license. Post your usage and goal, and approved contractors who work in Iredell County can respond with an evaluation, a free site visit or an estimate.
Who issues solar permits in Mooresville?
The Town of Mooresville's Building Permitting and Inspections Department has handled permits inside town limits since September 2023. Most of the rest of Iredell County, including Statesville, goes through the Iredell County Building Standards Division.
Does EnergyUnited allow customer solar and batteries?
EnergyUnited is a member-owned cooperative with its own interconnection process and rules for member generation. Ask your contractor to confirm the co-op's current application steps and how exported power is credited before you sign a contract.
Can solar run a dairy or cattle farm well pump?
Solar can offset a farm's daytime pumping, and a battery can keep a well running during an outage if it is sized for the pump's starting surge. Larger farm pumps may need a generator. An evaluation should list every pump and its horsepower.
