Who runs Forest City's electric system

The Town of Forest City in Rutherford County owns and operates its electric utility, and the town council sets the rates. Forest City is an ElectriCities member town. Much of the surrounding county is served by other utilities, so confirm your provider on your bill.

How Forest City handles rooftop solar

Forest City has posted interconnection procedures, an interconnection request form and a standard power purchase agreement between the customer and the town. A typical home system is a certified inverter system of 20 kW or less, which can go through the Fast Track review. You file an interconnection request with a site plan, a one-line diagram and inverter spec sheets, then the town screens it for safety and reliability.

After installation you submit a Certificate of Completion. The town may inspect and witness test the system, and you cannot run it in parallel with the grid until the town authorizes it. You need a visible, lockable disconnect labeled Generator Disconnect Switch, and the customer pays for metering. The power purchase agreement renews yearly. Ask the town for the current rate or rider it references so you know the credit before you buy.

Outages and Helene

Hurricane Helene in late September 2024 left much of western North Carolina without power. In nearby Bostic, the town reported that downed lines and poles kept its backup generator from being used safely. Town crews and mutual aid help, but when trees are down on your road the wait can still be long.

A small, local crew is one of the strengths of a town system. ElectriCities figures show public power customers in North Carolina average under one outage a year and about an hour of total outage time. Storms do not read the averages, so plenty of town customers still want a plan for the day the power is out longer than that.

Solar alone shuts off when the grid goes down. That is a safety rule, so line crews are not hurt by power feeding back into the lines. To keep lights, a fridge and a well pump running during an outage you need a battery, a generator or both. Under a buy-all, sell-all setup the panels often feed their own meter, so how a battery fits depends on Forest City Electric's metering rules. A good contractor designs around them.

Get a straight answer with a $349 evaluation

The honest answer to whether solar makes sense on a Forest City Electric account depends on your roof, your usage and the town's current credit rules. A paid home energy evaluation on HomeBackupPros covers all three for $349: an electric audit, a review of how you use energy and a written system quote. If you go ahead with that contractor, the $349 comes off the purchase price.

It also gets a contractor to Forest City on a real schedule instead of someday. Every contractor on HomeBackupPros is approved by our team after we check their NC electrical contractor license. They are independent businesses, and HomeBackupPros does not install anything. Your address goes only to contractors you choose to share it with. If you prefer, a contractor can offer a free site visit or a mailed estimate instead.

Questions

Does Forest City allow rooftop solar?

Yes. The town posts interconnection procedures, a request form and a power purchase agreement. Home systems of 20 kW or less with certified inverters usually go through the Fast Track review.

Can I turn on my solar as soon as it is installed?

No. Forest City requires a Certificate of Completion and may witness test the system. You cannot operate in parallel with the grid until the town authorizes it or waives the test.

How does Forest City pay for solar power?

Through a power purchase agreement that references a town rate or rider. The posted template does not list the rate, so ask the town for the current credit before you sign.

What backup do Rutherford County homes usually need?

After Helene, many homeowners plan for multi-day outages. That usually means a propane or natural gas generator, a battery for quiet short-term backup, or both, with the well pump on the critical list.
