What you can book in Watauga County

Three providers, three sets of rules

Most homes in Watauga County outside Boone are members of Blue Ridge Energy, a member-owned cooperative. New River Light and Power is a nonprofit utility operated by Appalachian State University and serves the town of Boone, the university and nearby areas. Mountain Electric Cooperative, which buys its power from the Tennessee Valley Authority, serves part of the county as well.

None of these three is rate-regulated by the NC Utilities Commission, and each sets its own terms for home solar. Blue Ridge Energy has a residential net metering schedule for systems up to 25 kW, with unused credits settled once a year. New River Light and Power has its own customer-owned generation rules.

Ask your contractor to confirm the current interconnection rules for your provider in writing before you size anything.

Winter sun, snow and wells

Watauga County gets more snow than most of North Carolina. Racking needs to be rated for that snow load, and panel tilt matters for shedding it. Ground mounts in an open field can be easier to clear than a steep metal roof.

Sun varies a lot. A ridge-top home near Deep Gap may have open sky all day, while a house down in a cove off Meat Camp or Beaver Dam can lose winter sun by mid afternoon. Rhododendron and hardwoods add shade too.

Wells are the norm outside Boone and Blowing Rock, so the well pump is usually the first load people want on backup. Propane is easy to get delivered here, and a lot of homeowners pair a battery with a propane standby generator for long outages.

The $349 home energy evaluation

Getting a solar company to come out in Watauga County can mean waiting weeks. HomeBackupPros lets you book a home energy evaluation for $349, so an approved contractor puts you on the calendar.

You get an electric audit, a review of how your home uses energy through the year, and a written quote for a system. If you buy the system from that same contractor, the $349 is credited toward the purchase price.

Contractors may instead offer a free site visit or send an estimate, and you choose. Bring a year of kWh from your Blue Ridge Energy, New River Light and Power or Mountain Electric bills, plus a list of what runs on electric and what runs on propane or wood.

Permits and choosing a contractor

Outside town limits, Watauga County Planning and Inspections issues building permits. The Town of Boone and some other towns run their own permitting, so your contractor should confirm the right office and pull the permit.

North Carolina requires an electrical contractor license for solar PV work of any value. Every contractor on HomeBackupPros is reviewed and approved by our team before they can respond, and we check their NC electrical contractor license number. The contractors are independent businesses. HomeBackupPros does not install anything and does not employ them. "Best" is the directory name, not a rating.

Your street address is shared only if you choose. Your name, phone and email go only to the contractor you pick. See also Boone and Ashe County.

Watauga County questions

Who provides electricity in Watauga County?

Blue Ridge Energy serves most of the county outside Boone. New River Light and Power, operated by Appalachian State, serves Boone, the university and nearby areas. Mountain Electric Cooperative serves part of the county. Your bill shows which one you have.

Does Blue Ridge Energy allow net metering?

Blue Ridge Energy has a residential net metering schedule for solar systems up to 25 kW. Excess energy is credited monthly, carried forward, and settled once a year. Terms can change, so ask your contractor to confirm the current schedule.

What should I back up first during a winter outage?

Most Watauga County homeowners start with the well pump, refrigerator, furnace blower or a few heat pump circuits, lights and internet. A whole home generator covers more, while a battery is quieter and pairs with solar. The evaluation can price both.

Can I go off grid in Watauga County?

It is possible but takes a large battery bank, a generator for long cloudy stretches, and careful attention to heating. Most homeowners here stay grid-tied with battery backup. A contractor can show you the cost difference using your actual usage.
