Five electric providers in Burke County
Duke Energy Carolinas and Rutherford EMC each serve a large share of Burke County. The City of Morganton runs its own municipal electric system, Morganton Electric, and the Town of Drexel has its own as well, Drexel Electric. Mountain Electric Cooperative, which buys its power from the Tennessee Valley Authority, serves a small part of the county.
Duke Energy customers who add solar are on rules approved by the NC Utilities Commission in 2023, with time-of-use pricing and a minimum bill. A battery helps under those rules. Ask about PowerPair capacity.
Co-ops and municipal systems are not rate-regulated by the Utilities Commission and set their own solar terms. Ask your contractor to confirm the current rules for your provider.
Foothills ground and backup needs
Burke County mixes Piedmont subdivisions around Morganton and Valdese with steep, wooded country up toward Jonas Ridge and Linville Gorge. South-facing roofs in town can be strong solar sites, while homes tucked under hardwoods on the mountain side may do better with a ground mount or with battery and generator backup alone.
Helene caused widespread damage and long outages in Burke County in 2024. Fallen trees on lines are the usual outage cause here, and that risk is higher on rural co-op lines that run through woods.
Wells are common outside town water service, and summers are hot enough that air conditioning drives the bill. Natural gas reaches parts of the county, and propane covers the rest.
The $349 home energy evaluation
Solar contractors in the foothills are busy, and a quote can slide weeks out. HomeBackupPros lets you book a home energy evaluation for $349 so an approved contractor puts you on the schedule.
You get an electric audit, a review of your energy use, and a written quote for a system. If you buy that system from the same contractor, the $349 is credited toward the purchase price.
Contractors may also offer a free site visit or send an estimate. You choose. Bring a year of kWh from your Duke Energy Carolinas, Rutherford EMC, Morganton, Drexel or Mountain Electric bill, and list what runs on electric versus gas.
Permits and licensed contractors
Burke County handles building permits and inspections for most of the county. The City of Morganton's Building Inspections Division covers the city and its extraterritorial area. Your contractor should confirm which office covers your address and pull the permit.
North Carolina requires an electrical contractor license for solar PV work of any value. Every contractor on HomeBackupPros is reviewed and approved by our team, and we check their NC electrical contractor license number. Contractors are independent businesses. HomeBackupPros does not install anything and does not employ them.
Your street address is shared only if you choose. Your name, phone and email go only to the contractor you pick. See also Morganton, McDowell County and Caldwell County.

Burke County questions
Which electric companies serve Burke County?
Duke Energy Carolinas and Rutherford EMC serve most of the county. Morganton and Drexel each run municipal electric systems, and Mountain Electric Cooperative serves a small area. Your bill tells you which one applies.
Can I get net metering in Drexel or Morganton?
Municipal electric systems in North Carolina are not required to offer net metering, though some do. Ask your contractor to confirm the current customer-owned generation rules with your town's electric department before you sign anything.
How do I size a battery for a well pump?
Start with the pump's horsepower and voltage. The battery and inverter need enough surge to start it and enough storage to run it with your other key loads. A contractor can read the pump label during the evaluation.
Where can I get a solar quote in Burke County?
Post your request on HomeBackupPros. Approved contractors who serve Burke County respond with a free visit, an estimate, or a $349 home energy evaluation that is credited if you buy the system from them.
